Jim tells us his story for 31 out of 34 chapters, and we can scarcely help but identify with his plucky creativity and his willingness to put himself in danger to help his friends. Because Jim risks so much, his reward is equally great: he gets a share of Flint's 700,000 pounds in gold bars. Not too shabby for the son of provincial innkeepers.
