The Turn of the Screw

The Turn of the Screw

by Henry James

Analysis: Steaminess Rating

Exactly how steamy is this story?

PG

OK, so there's no sex overtly mentioned in this story –it is, after all, a Victorian story about children. But The Turn of the Screw gets a "P" added to that "G" simply because of the implied ick factor. There are a lot of secretly icky, weird feelings in the mix here…between Quint and Miss Jessel, Quint and Miles, the Governess and the children's uncle, and, most of all, between Miles and the Governess. Sure, nobody even mentions sex – the topic was forbidden in polite fiction at the time – but we have to wonder what the characters are really thinking about each other.
