Two Night Watchmen

Character Analysis

In "Circe," two Irish policeman patrol Nighttown. Before entering Bella Cohen's brothel, Bloom imagines an elaborate encounter with them. They tell him they are concerned with animal cruelty, and ask why he is feeding a stray dog. The sequence segues into Bloom's long masochistic fantasy of being tried in court as a lewd man. At the end of the episode, when Stephen gets in a fight with Private Carr, the two policeman arrive on the scene. They want to take down Stephen's name but Bloom, with the help of Corny Kelleher, manages to talk them out of it.
