Uncle Tom's Cabin

Uncle Tom's Cabin

by Harriet Beecher Stowe

Antagonist

Character Role Analysis

Simon Legree

Simon Legree is the evil slave holder who abuses his slaves and tries to destroy Uncle Tom’s honest, compassionate nature to put him in charge of all his slaves. Legree is evil through and through. Despite his anxiety and superstition over his own evil, Legree makes no effort at all to rein himself in or to control himself. Though characters like Uncle Tom would chide us for this, we took great pleasure in his ultimate sufferings, the evil wretch.
