Apollo, a la Shmoop.

00:08

Oh, hey guys. My name is Apollo, and I’m here to tell you about...um...

00:12

Gods, I don’t even remember what I’m supposed to be talking about.

00:15

I guess I’ve been a little bummed lately, you know?

00:18

The girl I love can never be mine.

00:20

I’m sure you’re thinking… how could Apollo be so lovesick?

00:24

He’s one of the most popular gods.

00:27

Not only is he the god of light...

00:29

...he’s the god of music and prophecy.

00:33

He’s got everything going for him.

00:35

What girl…mortal or immortal… would ever say no to him?

00:41

Well, folks, the sad fact is that the girl I love is no girl at all.

00:45

I’m actually in love with this tree.

00:48

OK, that probably sounded weird. Allow me to explain....

00:51

This laurel tree was once a beautiful nymph named Daphne <<DAFF-knee>>.

00:56

She was the daughter of the river god Peneus <<puh-KNEE-iss>>,

00:59

and she lived a perfect life with her dad and sister nymphs.

01:03

Her life was perfect… at least until I came along.

01:06

See, I used to be pretty full of myself.

01:09

I had reason to be.

01:10

But too much pride can bring anybody down.

01:14

Even a god.

01:16

It all turned bad for me on the day I slew the vicious Python.

01:22

I can’t say I feel bad for killing that thing, even if it was an endangered species.

01:29

After all, it had tried to eat my mother while she was pregnant

01:32

with my twin sister Artemis <<AR-tuh-miss>> and me.

01:35

Afterwards, I ran into Cupid and started bragging how awesome a bowman I was,

01:40

and that I was better than him...yada yada yada…

01:43

Suffice it to say, Cupid did not take it well.

01:46

To get me back, he struck me with one of his golden arrows,

01:49

cursing me to fall in love with the next person I saw.

01:52

As I’m sure you’ve already guessed, the next person I saw was the gorgeous Daphne.

01:56

You might be thinking, what’s so bad about falling in love with a beautiful nymph?

02:00

You ever watch The Bachelor?

02:02

The thing is that Cupid also struck Daphne with a lead-tipped arrow

02:05

that made her never want to love anybody at all.

02:09

Next thing I know, I’m chasing her through the woods like a major creeper.

02:13

It was crazy. One moment I was on top of the world, and the next I’m a stalker extraordinaire.

02:18

Poor Daphne was terrified and called out to her father, begging for help.

02:22

For some unknown reason, Peneus decided the only way to help

02:25

his daughter was to turn her into a laurel tree.

02:30

I felt super bad about everything, and I did what I could to make it better.

02:33

I used my godly powers to make the laurel forever green.

02:38

To remember her, I always wear a wreath of laurel leaves in my hair.

02:42

It’s just not enough, though, guys. This laurel wreath can never replace her.

02:45

Even though she’s made of wood, my heart still beats for her.

02:51

If only Peneus had turned my heart into wood as well…
