Description:

Don’t be like Dr. Dan who cuts off the wrong leg during surgery. That’s just embarrassing. Okay, yes, it’s also “malpractice,” but that’s such an ugly word. Let’s just go with “embarrassing.”

Achievement and Excellence

00:05

a la Shmoop [image of an apple kept on a book]

00:07

Doctor Fran and Doctor Dan are both surgeons.

00:10

Doctor Fran's worked hard her entire life.

00:12

She was at the top of her class, [two surgeons talking to each other]

00:14

excelled in her internship,

00:16

and is now a resident at the best hospital in the state.

00:20

Doctor Dan...

00:21

hasn't done that.

00:23

He was in the bottom percent of his class,

00:24

barely scraped by in his internship, [Dr. Dan walking while the background changes]

00:26

and is now a resident at this hospital. [ chuckle ]

00:29

Reassuring, right?

00:31

Well, Doctor Fran and Doctor Dan each complete two surgeries during the day.

00:35

Doctor Fran's go off without any problems.

00:37

Her work is excellent and at the end of the day,

00:40

she has two healthy patients and feels pretty darn good about herself. [Dr Fran talking to two of her patients in the hospital]

00:44

Doctor Dan's surgeries? Well, they got done.

00:46

But his good-enough attitude leads to some issues.

00:50

He sews up one of his patients

00:51

without checking to see if he left anything inside of him.

00:54

And he amputated the wrong leg on this guy. [Dr. Dan amputating left leg of a patient]

00:56

Looks like he'll be all right though. [ clears throat ]

00:59

But, hey, Doctor Dan finished his surgeries.

01:01

Yeah, so they weren't amazing.

01:03

Big deal.

01:04

Why should he care about delivering excellent results

01:06

when he can get by on good enough? [a patient screaming in pain]

01:09

Well, here's the thing.

01:10

Mediocrity is fine and dandy, but it

01:12

doesn't make us feel accomplished

01:14

and what if it was you undergoing that surgery?

01:17

Anyone can give a C effort,

01:19

but it's the A plus efforts that make us feel great [a girl happy about pizza party for A grade students]

01:21

and boost our confidence and, well, improve the world.

01:25

And achieving excellence in any facet of your life

01:27

tends to make people sit up and take notice of you.

01:29

That's why Doctor Fran is here

01:31

and Doctor Dan is here. [image of Dr. Fran and Dr. Dan with their certificates in their offices]

01:33

We're not knocking mediocrity.

01:34

Hey, it's better than apathy,

01:36

like Doctor Stan over here.

01:38

Probably don't wanna go to Doctor Stan.

01:42

But the feeling of accomplishment we get when we achieve a goal is pretty great. [two doctors talking to each other]

01:46

And we definitely aren't saying you need

01:47

to perform brain surgery while playing Mozart

01:49

and reciting Shakespeare to achieve excellence.

01:52

It can be as simple as shaving a minute off of your mile time,

01:55

learning a new piece of music,

01:57

or finally getting that promotion at work. [someone playing a piano]

01:59

Really it's anything that makes you feel accomplished.

02:02

You can be a Doctor Dan

02:03

and go through your life doing everything good enough,

02:06

or you can be a Doctor Fran, work hard, and achieve your goals.

02:10

Seriously, you don't wanna be a Doctor Stan. [a patient shaking hands with Dr. Fran and thanking her]

02:14

Who gave this guy a license?
