Leadership

00:05

a la Shmoop

00:06

Leaders.

00:07

They're the people who know how to get things done. [coach motivating a kids team]

00:09

They inspire us to work harder and achieve more.

00:12

And they know how to keep almost any situation

00:15

under control.

00:16

We're surrounded by leaders. [Image of Mount Rushmore]

00:19

But Oscar? Well, he's not one of them.

00:22

Oscar has spent the past three days

00:24

playing video games and eating cheese puffs in his underwear.

00:26

Sounds kind of fun, actually.

00:28

He's running low on money to fund his cheese puff habit, [boy playing video game while lying on the sofa]

00:30

so he figures, well, what the heck?

00:32

Might as well go on a job interview.

00:34

But, believe it or not, the interviewer isn't impressed

00:37

that his only leadership experience

00:38

is leading his troops to victory in Call of Duty: Black Ops. [someone going through a resume]

00:41

All from the comfort of his underwear.

00:45

So how can Oscar go from shlub

00:47

to leader?

00:48

Well, putting on pants might help.

00:50

But, uh, most leaders wear pants. [image of a direction sign board]

00:51

Unless you're Ghandi, but that guy was a rebel.

00:54

All right. Leaders tend to possess certain traits, right?

00:56

They're honest. They're confident.

00:58

They're committed to their cause.

01:00

They retain a positive attitude throughout hardships. [image of political leaders from across the world]

01:03

And they have the ability to inspire.

01:05

Though, this one should be used wisely.

01:08

Spidey's uncle wasn't lying about the great power great responsibility thing.

01:12

Strengthening those traits

01:13

will help you become a better leader. [Martin Sheen talking to spider man]

01:15

If only Shmoop had some sort of program

01:17

that could help with that. Hmm.

01:19

Wonder where that could be.

01:20

Anyway, it's helpful to keep in mind that there are different

01:23

types of leadership. [explanation of Types of Leaders written on a board]

01:24

Oscar knows about democratic leadership.

01:27

Well, all right, maybe a refresher would help.

01:29

Democratic leaders share decision-making with the group.

01:33

Within a democratic leadership,

01:35

discussion and debate are important, [image of former Presidents of US laughing together]

01:37

as is the sharing of ideas.

01:39

So if Oscar asked his Call of Duty troops

01:42

what the best plan of attack was

01:44

and took their advice into consideration,

01:46

he'd be a democratic leader.

01:48

An authoritarian leader keeps strict control [boy in a soldiers uniform, holding a gun]

01:52

over their followers.

01:53

[ dun-dun-dun ] Yeah, like this guy.

01:55

If Oscar supervised everything his troops did,

01:58

never let them aid in the decision-making process,

02:00

and valued efficiency over everything else,

02:02

well, he'd fit in well with this club [soldiers with their gun waiting to fire]

02:04

Though how they elect a club president

02:06

we'll never know.

02:07

If Oscar decides to be a paternalistic leader,

02:11

he'd be a father figure to his troops,

02:13

taking care of them as a parent would.

02:15

This isn't so much about efficiency

02:17

as it is concern for the well-being of his followers. [a teacher asking if anyone wants more recess]

02:20

And laissez-faire leaders are in favor of delegation.

02:23

They like a hands-off approach.

02:25

So if Oscar's leading his troops like this...

02:28

He's probably a fan of laissez-faire.

02:30

Now that Oscar knows all he can about leadership,

02:33

he's ready to conquer the world.

02:34

When his next interview comes around, [someone going through a resume]

02:36

he's ready. He preps by...

02:38

by... really?

02:40

Ugh. Well, you can lead a horse to water...

02:42

Bottom line - change doesn't happen without someone

02:45

leading the cause.

02:46

If there's something out there that you [image of a man and a horse on TV]

02:48

don't think is fair, you don't need to be like Oscar

02:50

and wait for someone else to take charge.

02:52

Sometimes you just gotta pull up your pants

02:54

and take care of it yourself.

02:56

Unless you're like Ghandi.

02:57

Then go change the world however you see fit, [boy watching a video of Gandhi and followers on TV]

03:00

you pantsless wonder.

03:03

[ groan ]
