Description:

If the “check engine” light pops up on your dashboard, perhaps it would be best to take it to a mechanic. Or you could just risk losing control over your car, hitting a pedestrian, going to prison for manslaughter, and a permanent criminal record… Yeah, to the mechanics we go.

Responsibility and Property [image of an apple on top of a book]

00:05

a la Shmoop

00:07

Jimmy's got a sweet ride.

00:09

And when the open road calls his name, [Jimmy driving a car]

00:11

he listens.

00:12

There's just something about the wind in his hair

00:14

that makes him forget about all of his problems.

00:16

Like the fact that he has no money. [Jimmy checking his account balance in an ATM]

00:18

So whenever he gets a notice to bring his car in for a tune-up,

00:21

he tosses it in the recycling bin.

00:23

And, hey, his car is running just fine. [a paper with the sign Notice tossed in a trash bin]]

00:25

Sure, the brakes aren't what they used to be

00:26

and there are a few squeaks and rattles,

00:28

but it's nothing serious.

00:29

Besides, he'll get it fixed... eventually. [Jimmy driving a car]

00:32

Maybe tomorrow.

00:33

Today, though, Jimmy's cruising through his neighborhood,

00:35

enjoying the sunshine, and making sure he waves

00:37

to his neighbor Annie every time he passes. [a small girl looking at a car passing by]

00:40

She loves his car and has been begging for a ride.

00:43

He's promised to take her for a spin someday.

00:45

Maybe tomorrow. [image of a letter addressing Jimmy]

00:46

Right now, he's too busy enjoying the sunshine

00:48

and blocking out the world.

00:50

He's also blocking out his baby's check engine light,

00:53

check brake light, and check oil light. [indicator turning on, on a speedometer]

00:55

Jeez.

00:56

But hey, those lights are just suggestions, right?

00:59

Well, Jimmy decides to call it a night.

01:01

He turns down the street and is almost home

01:03

when a ball rolls into the road. [a football rolls into the road]

01:04

And by the time he sees Annie chasing after it,

01:07

well, it's too late.

01:09

[ ow ] Good going, Jim boy.

01:11

Hey, at least you got out of paying a mechanic.

01:14

That feels pretty good, right? [a mechanic fixing a car]

01:15

Somehow Jimmy gets lucky. Annie's gonna pull through.

01:18

And because his negligence almost deprived

01:20

a little girl of all her tomorrows, [Jimmy visiting a girl at the hospital]

01:23

Jimmy's at the mechanic the next day.

01:25

Being responsible for your own property

01:27

is an art.

01:27

If keeping the things you own up to date [a mechanic fixing Jimmy's car]

01:29

and safe can avoid this, well then, we suggest you do it.

01:32

Be honest with yourself.

01:34

If you can't afford something, don't buy it.

01:36

And if you bought something you can't afford to run, [Jimmy holding an ice cream in his hand]

01:39

well, sell it.

01:40

Yeah, that's what E-Bay is for.

01:42

Oh, and Jimmy?

01:43

Give her a ride in your car. [Jimmy and Annie going for a drive]

01:44

You never know if there's gonna be a tomorrow.

01:46

[ scream ]
