Housman may have been everyone's favorite rural poet, but he was also a city boy with a broken heart. See, he was in love with his college roommate, but the college roommate didn't return the love. As it turns out, this most G-rated of poets had a pretty sad back-story. Read all about it here.

Housman published his first collection of poetry, A Shropshire Lad (which includes "When I was One-and-Twenty"), at his own expense because he couldn't find a publisher who would take it (source).
