When You Reach Me Chapter 18 Summary

Things on a Slant

  • Jimmy lets Colin and Annemarie start serving sandwiches to the customers.
  • Not Miranda, though – she can't make a successful "V-cut" (the special way Jimmy has of cutting the rolls at a forty-five degree angle) (18.4). He says this while doing an impression of an Asian-American person that would have insulted Miranda's mom (and most people).
  • Jimmy calls Miranda's V-Cut's "unappealing," so Miranda has to count the sandwich bread and make hot chocolate while Colin and Annemarie make sandwiches (18.5). Jimmy makes kissing noises at them.
  • Miranda's V-cuts get worse.
