Aunt Bertha in The Great Brain

By John D. Fitzgerald

Aunt Bertha

Aunt Bertha is the extra member in the Fitzgerald household: "She wasn't really our aunt, but we called her Aunt Bertha because she was just like one of the family" (1.29). We know very little about Aunt Bertha since her only real actions are to shake her head over the antics of the boys or Papa. She moved in with the Fitzgeralds when her husband died, and she's clearly a great help to Mamma around the house, so based on the historical context we're guessing there's a reciprocal relationship there of room and board for household help. Go team.
