Midwinterblood Part 4, Chapter 5

By Marcus Sedgwick

Part 4, Chapter 5

  • The next day, Merle heads back to the orchard.
  • She gets on her hands and knees and crawls to the apple and pear trees; she finds some delicious looking ones that have fallen off the trees.
  • Suddenly, Merle realizes that maybe the old man isn't picking the fruit because he can't—he is old, after all, and slightly hunchbacked.
  • So Merle dashes over to the tree and picks two apples. She sets one of the front porch of the house and takes the other with her to eat on the way home.
