The Golem and the Jinni Chapter 19

By Helene Wecker

Chapter 19

  • The Jinni sets the unconscious Golem down in order to think of a place to hide her.
  • He notices the locket with the slip of paper in it, and he takes the paper.
  • When she wakes up, and the Jinni tells her what happened, she feels guilty and responsible for almost killing a man.
  • She also kind of blames the Jinni for causing her to "forget [her] caution" (19.22).
  • He says that if that's how she feels "you needn't ever see me again" (19.28), and with that, they part ways.
  • Later, the Golem decides to destroy herself… but the piece of paper is gone from the locket.
  • What's a girl to do when she can't destroy herself? Simple: propose marriage. She goes to Michael and asks him to marry her.
  • The Jinni returns to Arbeely's forge, where Arbeely has a new business idea: women's jewelry.
  • What an idea. The Jinni has an idea for a fabulous necklace…
  • While he's working on the necklace, forging links with his bare hands, Matthew walks in.
  • Matthew is a boy from the building the Jinni made the tin ceiling for.
  • The Jinni makes Matthew promise to tell no one what he's seen… then he makes the boy his apprentice, ordering him to snip pieces of silver wire.
  • A few days later, a not-so-special delivery arrives for Ahmad: The Golem has returned the silver bird.
  • The Jinni casts the figure into the fire.
