The Canterbury Tales: The Wife of Bath's Tale Lines 905-918
By Geoffrey Chaucer
The queen thanks the king, then speaks to the knight upon her first opportunity.
She says to him, you cannot be certain that you will keep your life. I will grant you your life if you can tell me what women most desire. If you cannot tell me what women most desire right now, I grant you permission to go away for a year to search for an answer.
The queen says that his friends must vouch for him, that he'll return after a year.
