6th Grade Computer Science - Course Introduction

For a long time, computers didn't even have screens that could show pictures. Mostly, all they showed was rows and rows and rows of numbers.

Yawn.

Now that they have visuals, computers are so much more than the sum of their math operations. Programming? It's now for everyone. And all of the programming we'll be doing is going to focus on projects—mainly games.

Sorry if you just imagined yourself writing the next Final Fantasy sequel, but we're thinking more of the retro basics. You'll be creating your own

  • Pong
  • Pac-Man
  • Choose-your-own-adventures

And for all these projects, we'll be using a programming language called Scratch. It's easy to jump right in with Scratch and build amazing projects (no, really).

Not only does Scratch love making videos and games, but it gives you blocks to build commands like puzzle pieces, Legos, or even off-brand Legos . Those pieces might not do much on their own, but if you join them together, you can create amazing projects.

After Scratch, we'll take on the internet and do some work in HTML and CSS. No, we don't have any Lego-type blocks for that one, but it's okay. You'll be ready for it. Not only will you be able to change the way people look at text on a webpage, but you'll be able to hook pages together to make an entire website.

In short, if this was a game, your only options to choose from at this point would be

  • move on to Unit 1 and get. Pumped.
  • move on to Unit 1 and…get pumped.

It's about to get visual.
