It's a long math equation, and it's the heart of one of the world's best, mostly-legal businesses. The Google search algorithm changed the landscape of the internet in applying mathematical computation, quality scoring, and other linear algebraic magic, to allow billions of internet users to quickly find the, um, blurry art film pictures they were seeking in as few clicks as possible.

The old technology was manually curated lists of links, i.e., the old Yahoo, and when the algorithm multiplied by a computer's processing power competed against mankind, the robot won handily.
