Ever wonder how it came to be that money was in essence "on" your credit card, and how you can be approved or denied a transaction as you stand at the register? It started, in part, in 1973, when Bank of America developed the first real-time credit card authorization system. It was part of the VisaNet system, and is today called the Visa card. The "BASE" part is an acronym for Bank America System Engineering.
