If a company is “in the red,” that means it’s bleeding, i.e. producing negative earnings.

If a company is “in the black,” it’s making cash money like it ain’t no thang.

The red and black colors are from the color of ink used by accountants on companies’ financial statements, like old-school teachers do when they grade papers. Black is the new (old?) black.
