Legalese for being in violation of contractually agreed upon terms and conditions; failure to fulfill these obligations can result in outcomes ranging from penalty fees to alteration of terms to termination of the original agreement.

Rumpelstiltskin agreed to turn straw into gold to save the life of the miller’s daughter...in exchange for her first-born child. After giving birth, she refused to part with her child, placing her in breach of contract. Rumpy had his choice of remedies, including financial compensation (she offered him all her wealth), ending her life (never discussed), or altering the terms (which he chose, to his detriment).
