Break In Service

A disruption in benefits arising from an employee’s separation from her employer for a period of more than one calendar quarter (13 weeks).

Solange worked for her sister’s chain of lemonade stands for several years. However, she was overcome with a desire to pursue her true passion of singing, and left the family business to take voice lessons and record an album of elevator music.

Four months later, after an unfortunate experience in one of the elevators, Solange returned to the lemonade business. This hiatus resulted in a break in service, making her ineligible for vacation, healthcare benefits, or free cups of lemonade until the following calendar year.
