Budget Deficit

When a company has more expenses than revenue, it’s called “unprofitable,” but when the government does it, it’s less harshly dubbed a “budget deficit.”

Quite a double standard of semantics, but to be fair, companies can’t (legally) print their own money like Uncle Sam can when the government suddenly realizes that the cost of entitlement programs will be much higher than originally forecast.

To his credit, Billy, being quite the wordsmith, told Ophelia that she would need to pay for their dinner date because he was experiencing a temporary budget deficit. Unbeknownst to Billy, Ophelia was Shmoop-educated, so at the end of their date, he also experienced a goodnight kiss deficit.
