Carding

Isn't this what Hallmark does? Or bouncers at bars? Also, it's a type of fraud with credit cards.

Thieves have many ways of stealing credit card information, Carding is a way to avoid getting caught. First, they steal a credit card number. The thieves then use the credit card to buy a prepaid gift card. He or she either sells the gift card for cash, loads up on gifts for themselves, or buys the gifts and then sells them. To further hide their identity, a carder might have the items shipped to a third party who then ships them to other locations.

Fortunately, if your credit card number is stolen and used in a carding scheme, you will not be liable for any charges. It's the credit card company who will be left holding the bag.
