The buyer with a big checkbook buys her littler competitors and consolidates a given "vertical," with the notion that, if they are the market leader, they can "set" (a.k.a. raise) prices, and the higher profit margins will more than warrant the load of debt the PAC-MAN eater took out to buy everything in the first place.
