Corruption

Say you want to sell your product in a foreign country. Immediately, an influential director from the nation’s commerce department solicits a bribe. That’s a pretty fair example of corruption.

Corruption is most easily defined as the use of power or prestige to engage in dishonest or unethical behavior for their gain.

But corruption isn't just on a case-by-case level. It's systemic. It is the difference between a free economy that values buyers and sellers...and a broken economy with grifting intermediaries who always have their hands out.

Many different groups monitor economic and political corruption. The Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), managed by Transparency International, and the Heritage Foundation’s Global Economic Freedom Index provide scores that estimate levels of corruption in each country.
