Also…if you want to know the exchange rate between two currencies, it can easily be calculated by referencing a third currency, such as good ol’ reliable U.S. dollars. This is known as finding the cross rate.

Let’s say you're trying to convert Japanese yen to Nigerian naira (not something usually published in the Wall Street Journal). You will need to know the exchange rate of dollars to yen, and then also dollars to naira.
