Just like a breach in a dam, a data breach happens when confidential information is accessed and released to an unauthorized person.
This can occur when a hacker breaks into a company’s database, or an unprotected laptop is stolen. Frequently occurring with large department stores, a data breach can also result in access to sensitive data, such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, health information, or trade secrets that are then sold on the black market.
