Demographics

Categories: Metrics, Econ

Michael Jackson told us "It don't matter if you're black or white." Aaliyah sang that "Age ain't nothing but a number."

Just tell that to the marketing industry. They pay close attention to demographics, the study of a certain population based on age, race, sex, income level, etc.

For example, if you want to sell pizza, you might discover that a particular type of person—young male college student—is your best customer. You'll then want to market to that demographic.

If you market instead to the dog demographic, you're going to sell far fewer pizzas. The opposable thumb thing is always an issue when trying to place an order.
