An emerging industry is one that is still developing. The products are new and the sector is in its early stages.

Nowadays, Internet search companies, like Google, are part of a developed industry. The service has been around for decades. Everyone uses it. Google is very profitable, one of the most influential companies in the world.

But in the 1990s, Internet search was an emerging industry. It was a new line of business. Revenues were relatively small. Companies had a hard time making a profit. It took a large amount of investment to turn companies like Google from dorm-room startups into multi-billion dollar conglomerates.
