Evening Up

Something 5 pm might say to 6 pm if it gets too whiny. Like...six o'clock might say "it's hard work when sunset happens during me." And then five o'clock would say, "oh, evening up and stop complaining." Elsewhere, 5 am might say "morning up" to 6 am.

More commonly, when you pronounce "evening" like in "evening the score," it refers to the closing of an investment position.

Think of it as returning to a neutral stance. You bought a stock, thinking it would go up. It has gone as high as you think it will go. So you sell it. When you sell it, you are "evening up"...i.e. getting back to neutral.

On the other side, if you have a short position and then cover the short, you are evening up as well.
