Also, in finance, ex-ante is a fancy-person MBA term that means “before the fact.” You aren’t reporting history...you’re predicting the future.

People successfully invest by guessing what will happen in the future. To buy low and sell high, you have to have an inkling that the thing you’re buying will go up in value. Therefore, investing involves a lot of ex-ante work...analyzing current results and using that info to predict what's likely to take place down the line.
