Forced Retirement

This is one of the nicest ways an organization can say to an employee, “You don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here.” It’s not the same as getting fired; a person can be forced into retirement for any number of reasons.

Maybe the company is moving in a new direction and the employee in question doesn’t fit with the new business model. Maybe the employee has suffered some medical malady that has made them unable to do their job. Maybe there was a scandal involving the employee that the organization wants to go away. Maybe the business needs to layoff its most expensive people. Or maybe it’s something else entirely.

Being forced into retirement by one organization doesn’t mean that person can’t go wok for someone else if they want to. And sometimes a forced retirement can include a nice severance package or continuation of benefits to soften the blow. So that’s something.
