And note that the world revolved around a whole lot of "partial disclosure" for a long time, wherein the privileged few who had direct access to company management received vastly more accurate information than the average Josie, who was just trying to invest her pension money.
The laws changed in the mid-1990s, such that when information came from a company that had to do with financial info, that company had to broadcast clearly and broadly to all what the new info was. The goal was to even the playing field between the haves and have-nots.
