Global Macro Strategy

There are lots of strategies for investing money. Some target particular regions (putting money in places like Russia or China). Others focus on specific industries (oil, finance, etc.).
Some get way in the weeds of some esoteric specialty (say, shorting municipal debt in Bangladesh). A global macro strategy goes the other way, focusing on broad economic and political trends, and the ways they impact financial markets as a whole.
A manager dedicated to the global macro strategy will examine the prevailing economic/business direction and make bets based on their projections of where those forces might lead.
So, for instance, if a U.S. conflict with Russia is brewing, the manager might short Russian bonds. Next year, if deregulation of the energy space looks likely, the manager might cover those Russian bets and move money into nuclear power stocks.
