Honorarium

A gift. A $5 word for donation.

It's notionally different, in that it "honors" someone or something. But the term generally applies to successful academics, or those who fight for the "good." They are then honored by the wealthy, who appreciate their efforts for the good of society.

Sort of the modern-day, tax-deductible equivalent of noblesse oblige.
