We had a big revolution in this regard in the late 19th century. The world went from a farm-centric one to a city-and-manufacturing-centric one. Thank you, railroads.

The process of turning raw materials into machinery that makes finished stuff from really raw materials is...industrialization. Do a lot of that, and you get a complex society and, well, microchips. And pollution. Don't forget about pollution. We're the largest producer in the world.
