Inland Revenue

Inland Revenue was the British equivalent of the IRS. We say “was” because, uh...it doesn’t exist anymore.

But when it was a thing, the Inland Revenue was responsible for collecting taxes and disbursing tax credits, both on the individual level and the corporate level. Since it seemed silly to separate that from the UK’s other tax functions, like sales tax administration, it was merged in 2005 with HM Customs and Excise, and now the two together are known as HM (“HM” = “Her Majesty’s”) Revenue and Customs.
