Way back when, all stock trading took place by people yelling things at each other and writing down info on scraps of paper. Even when they added computers, there was still a lot of yelling and writing stuff down. Nowadays, of course, most trading takes place within the transom of cyberspace...computers yelling at each other (or whatever it is computers do).

The International Securities Exchange provided a step in the direction of complete digitization. It launched in 2000 as an electronic options exchange. Since 2016, it has been part of the NASDAQ.
