Italexit (Italeave)

Categories: International, Econ

Italexit, or Italeave, is a not-so-creative, "oh, that’s right" way of saying “Italy leaving the EU.” In other words...it’s Brexit for Italy.

As the world is being swept up by more extremist parties, both Left and Right, it can be very much in vogue among the right crowds for politicians to suggest leaving the EU...whether it’s Italexit, Italeave, Oustria, or Frexit. And in fairness, some countries are simply more disciplined about how they manage their country's finances. Germany does well; Greece does not. So is it fair for Germans to sacrifice...in order to support 32-hours-a-week-working Greeks...who do not?

In general, those looking to leave the EU argue that it’s because they’re giving more than they’re getting from the EU, though basic trade economics might say otherwise, depending on what “leaving the EU” actually means. Free movement of people? No trade barriers? These are some of the economic benefits that the EU provides its members...so...yeah. Fairness. What's that all about, anyway?
