Liberty Reserve

Uncle Sam rides a giant eagle, assault rifle in one hand, a giant American flag in the other. He’s protecting the Liberty Reserve.

Actually, the term has nothing to do with underground stores of freedom true patriots have buried in Jackson County, Missouri. Instead, the phrase refers to a defunct money laundering operation...or, depending on your perspective, a freedom-loving safe money exchange that allowed people making transactions to keep their identities private.

Liberty Reserve was an online payment processor/early virtual currency founded in the mid 2000s and based in Costa Rica. The company was shut down in 2013 by U.S. authorities, who deemed it a multi-billion dollar money laundering operation. Doh.
