These are good. Especially if you own one.
Create a cancer-curing drug (and you'll have spent $1 billion of investor money doing so.) You'll want to give your investors at least some decent return on their invested money. If you don't, then the next time the allure of curing some horrible thing comes along, it'll be way harder to raise money to cure it.
So patents and the financial and legal protections they offer are vital to continued innovation. Go get one of these if you have something worthy.
