Plutocracy

Categories: Econ

Pluto...the smallest planet...isn’t even considered a planet anymore. Forgotten, sad. The “pluto” in “plutocracy” means “wealth,” while the “cracy” means “power”...basically the opposite of being small and forgotten.

A plutocracy is simply a society that’s governed by the wealthy. This differs from, but is similar to, aristocracy, which is a society that’s governed by a small, privileged (prob wealthy) class, implying institutionalized nepotism.

Similarly, plutocracy implies “dynastic wealth,” which is where money is handed down through generations without being earned by those latter generations.

You know plutocracies: the Roman Empire and old city-states run by wealthy merchants.
