Postdated

A new euphemism for having been dumped. "Yeah, Cindy and I are postdated at the moment."
Today's the fifth of the month and you need to pay your $1,500 rent. You have $17.23 in your bank account. However, your paycheck is coming in a couple days; as long as your landlord doesn't try to deposit your check before the end of the week, you should be okay.
So you send a postdated check. Instead of putting the fifth (today's date) as the check date, you write the 13th. Putting a future date on a check (rather than the current date) makes it postdated. You are creating a lag time between when the check is written and when it can be cashed, in order to give yourself time to get enough money in your bank account to cover the payment.
