Postnuptial Agreement

Categories: Incorporation

Think: Prenup. But after the...nup.

We just got married, and it was great. Beautiful ceremony, great food, yada yada. Now here we are, in the honeymoon suite on an island somewhere warm, when all of a sudden, we realize something. “Oh no,” we say, turning to our beautiful bride, “we forgot the prenup!”

A prenup, or prenuptial agreement, is a contract two people sign before they get married that details what’ll happen with their assets if they get divorced or one of them...kicks off. Luckily for us, “postnuptial agreements” also exist. They’re just like prenups, but we set them up after we get married. We can specify who gets the house, how the money will be split up, how our possessions will be divided, etc.

Is having this discussion the most romantic thing we could do on our honeymoon? Probably not, but if we’re worried about the future of our assets, it could be a conversation worth having.
