Regional exchanges (like the Chicago and Pacific Stock Exchanges) are to the big exchanges (like the NYSE) what the minor leagues are to the majors. They focus on servicing companies in their region and often deal in securities related to their core commercial interests. That is, Chicago is the broker for Midwest-grown commodities, like wheat and corn and, uh...dead meat.
