See: Retained Earnings. It's the same thing.

On a purely book value basis, you get this semi-meaningful number in Shareholders' Equity: Assets minus Liabilities. That's what it is.

The numbers on their own don't really mean all that much in a world with massive margin for error in the way data and value assessments are made. But it's a number that gets reported, and you oughta know what it is.
