Singles' Day

Wasn't this invented by Kraft?

It’s been a long time since Kyle’s last relationship. That fact used to get him down, but this year he’s decided to embrace his forever aloneness by planning a trip to Shanghai for China’s annual Singles’ Day.

What’s “Singles’ Day?” It’s like Valentine’s Day, but for the solo crowd. It’s celebrated on November 11, and basically, all the single ladies (and all the single dudes) spend the day buying themselves presents and indulging in some serious, um...self-love. Since its inception in 1993, Singles’ Day (originally called “Bachelors’ Day,” no relation to the show) has taken off in other countries as well. It’s now the largest online shopping day of the year, which is really saying something.

So why November 11th? Because November 11th = 11/11, and 11/11 is made up of four ones. Or four singles, if you will. In a strange twist of fate, Singles’ Day has now become a super popular wedding date, and there are tons of matchmaking events and relationship seminars scheduled on that day for all the merrymaking singles. Looks like we’ll have to wait and see how many of this year’s singles—like Kyle, perhaps?—spend next November 11 celebrating a newly-found love instead of their singledom.
