Smart Home

Categories: Tech

"Alexa, tickle my fancy." Ah, if only she could do that. But she will...someday.

A "smart" home is operated by computers, with (at least notionally) all kinds of "intelligence" built in. It can more or less sense what you want. It recognizes patterns. Like...you get home at 5:47 most nights and watch the evening news on NBC. So a smart home would automatically turn on the TV at 5:48 to the right channel. If your stove was wired, it could automatically turn it on. Soon, barcodes will be part of standard refrigerator inspection; yours will tell you what you need and when, and automatically order it from Amazon Prime or Fresh.

And like 837 other things Silicon Valley venture capitalists are funding today, hoping that 5 years from now this becomes The Next Big Thing.
