Topless Meeting

Categories: Company Management

Okay, so...a “topless meeting” is not what it sounds like. You won't find any centerfolds here. Sorry.

But, even though everyone in the meeting will be wearing a shirt (most likely), one thing they won’t have is their phones. Or their tablets. Or their laptops, Apple watches, Bluetooth ear pieces, or any other tech gadgets or gizmos. That’s because a “topless meeting” is a meeting where no personal electronic communication devices are allowed.

What’s the point? Well…ever try having a productive conversation with someone who is messing with their phone? Frustrating, isn’t it? We know we don’t have their undivided attention. In fact, sometimes it’s hard to tell if they’re listening to us at all. Now imagine trying to lead a business meeting with ten people on their phones, and we can see why more and more organizations are starting to go topless. With fewer distractions, meetings should hypothetically take less time and yield better outcomes, since everyone is actually tuned in and paying attention. What a concept, right?

Some colleges are even boarding the topless train, hoping that banning personal comm devices in the classroom will lead to more learning and less wasted time—on the part of the students and the professors.
