Tri-Star

Categories: Marketing

Old, semi-defunct movie studio (division of Sony/Columbia), founded by Victor Kaufman, today Barry Diller's henchman who runs IAC and yells at anyone he can to feel better about his own sense of power and Being in the world. No, his mommy didn't love him enough to shelter his daddy's beratings and belittlings. (Welcome to Hollywood, people; they're all like that.)

Anyway, Tri-Star was formed when Kaufman convinced CBS and Time Warner's HBO to pool resources to make films together under the rubric of fast-escalating costs. They studio pumped out a lot of meh flicks before slowly winding down and becoming less relevant and then facing a world where movies were no longer financially relevant, in the face of no "back end" or residual monies that would come from reruns. Instead of a given film selling two million DVDs at 30 bucks, because everyone just had to have it, the movie is today found on Netflix or Hulu, and the studio keeps a penny or three instead of ...real money. (Welcome to Hollywood again.)
