You’re middle-aged and out of touch. You’re also in charge of a surf equipment manufacturer. You’re not really sure what this Twitter thing is, but you’ve heard it’s important to get through to the young people. And most of your customers are young people.

So you put your 22-year-old intern in charge of it. You figure, "Hey, she's young...she's in touch...she listens to the hip-hop and watches the YouTube."

You might not know it, but you’ve just created a twinternship. The term refers to a case where an intern is given responsibility for improving a company's social media presence.
